Children’s Ministry
And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.” Mk 10.14
Principles of Children’s Ministry: Children’s ministry at The Church of the Resurrection is a subset of our discipleship ministries. We strive to be faithful in discipling and teaching the children that God entrusts to our congregation. Children’s ministry at Rez has a few guiding principles:
1. Parents are the primary disciplers of their children: All that we do at Rez is intended to support and assist parents in their God-given, biblical role to teach and disciple their children.
2. Responsibility for the children in our congregation rests with the entire congregation: The following exchange takes place during our baptismal liturgy, “Leader: Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support these persons in their lives in Christ? All: We will, with God’s help.” Everyone in the congregation is commits themselves to doing all in our power to support children in their lives in Christ.
3. Children’s ministry is about making disciples and not about entertainment: We believe that children can worship and know the living God and, therefore, our children’s ministry program is structured to encourage this and not simply to “entertain” or “babysit”. Children participate in worship, Bible study, scripture memory, and learning a catechism.
4. Children deserve excellence: In the same way that we take great care with our worship services, we want to take great care with our teaching and music with children on a weekly basis. We are working against the tendency in the church that overlooks children and seeking to provide programs with excellence for our children.
5. Children’s ministry is for children: We recognize and affirm the need for creativity and age-appropriate activities to engage their hearts and minds with God and his gospel. We are committed to using crafts and other creative activities to engage our children at a level which engages them and inspires them to know God more deeply.
Structure of Children’s Ministry Leadership: The Children’s Ministry Team is led by a team of 2-3 people who recruit, screen, and train volunteers, manage the weekly activities during worship, and participate on the CMC. Volunteers are asked to serve for a minimum of 6 months, and they must fill out an application and complete training to work with our children.
The children’s ministry at Rez is overseen by the Children’s Ministry Council (CMC) which comprises pastors, parents, and the Children’s Ministry Team Leaders. This council meets every 2-3 months to discuss all aspects of our ministry to children and to anticipate future concerns.
The clergy are committed to significant, regular involvement in the discipling of our children.
