History & Vision

The Church of the Resurrection is for those who seek personal renewal and community transformation through shared faith in Jesus Christ. We are united by an astonishing claim: “Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.” As followers of Jesus, our lives have been changed by this good news, and our hope is to share it with the world.

History

Resurrection started with a vision for establishing healthy churches throughout the city of Washington, DC. In 2002, a small group of us began meeting in homes together, and at the start of Advent, 2003, we transitioned to weekly public worship together. On Ash Wednesday, 2004, our friends at Christ our Shepherd Church on Capitol Hill opened their doors to us, and we have been meeting there ever since on Sundays at 5 pm. In 2007 we commissioned a team from our parish living in NW DC to establish our daughter congregation, the Church of the Advent, in Columbia Heights. In 2008 we commissioned another team from our parish living in northern Virginia to establish our daughter congregation, the Church of the Ascension, in Arlington. In 2009, we sent the Rev. Mark Booker and his family to Boston to establish the Church of the Cross, and we sent the Rev. Matthew Anderson to Africa to serve in ministry there.

A Cruciform Vision

We believe that a healthy church ought to be two dimensional: vertical and horizontal. By means of the vertical dimension, people experience reconciliation and peace with God, and are moved to worship and serve Him. Through the horizontal dimension, people experience reconciliation and peace with one another, and are moved to care for one another and work for the common good. Churches often focus on one dimension to the exclusion of the other. We want to do both. Taken together, the horizontal and vertical dimensions form our cruciform vision as a church for the city of Washington.
